With plenty of new and exciting Trance and Hard Dance nights hitting the Australian scene early in 2008, I am proud to present an interview with the smashing new production out fit Mice on Meth!!
Josh and Friends: How did you choose your name?
MiceOnMeth: Our name is a metaphor for meth/ice users, as they are mice trapped in a maze of despair on the drug. Meth/ice use is becoming an epidemic worldwide and we must promote awareness about this issue through every generation, especially the younger generation – it is everyone’s responsibility to help society as a whole. It's also historically accurate as the drug was first reproduced in 1919 and tested on mice by the military for use as a stimulant for combat soldiers to make them hyper-alert and aggressive - more mice on meth. Even though our name does give rise to controversy, human beings sometimes find it easier to deal with tragic and sad issues through satire and as a way to educate and perhaps alleviate the suffering caused by this drug. Unfortunately, no one seems to call out the pharmaceutical companies who release and legally sell products that contain the ingredient to make meth/ice - but that's another story.
Josh and Friends : So, tell us about your first album ULTRASOUND?
MiceOnMeth:
Ultrasound is our first album and it is the first of many more to come! The awesome feedback and support we have been getting is overwhelming. We think it is excellent that some people have asked us what genre we are! This is exactly the type of response we are glad to receive. Our songs do not fit into one particular genre - we like to experiment and give the listener something to explore and find in our music that they can personally connect to. This is very important to us. We take great enjoyment in listening to other music that breaks the barriers of convention and we would like to do the same with our own. Josh and Friends: What is the most important thing for you when you create music?
MiceOnMeth:
The most important thing for us when we create music is to try and take listeners out on many different journey’s – it’s the essence of our music. Psytrance as a whole in the last 10 years has developed so many sub-genres and that is great - but what we want to do is merge it all together and give them all of the psychedelic sounds but diversify and envelop them with electro break-beats and heavy riffs Josh and Friends: Alot of members on
www.joshandfriends.com.au are getting in production. Can you give them any words of advice?
MiceOnMeth: Music is a very subjective medium so everyone has different opinions about different styles. I my opinion, I find a lot of the sampling software very restrictive. Early on we went to great pains editing/creating loops and samples, obsessing over every note. I found using a midi keyboard with a virtual synth (VSTs) and just jamming to a beat, added a lot of fluidity to our music… and a lot more freedom. That’s not to say that you have to be a great keyboard player, because you can always clean it up on the computer. I found this a great way to make melodies (albeit one finger at a time … lol).
Also, we have to remember that music is an emotional and fluid media and not to and don’t get too bogged down into the technical details – get messy sometimes and go with the flow.
Josh and Friends: So where to next for Mice on Meth? What are you currently aiming for?
Mice on Meth: Hopefully we can establish ourselves as a label so that we can help other emerging artists by offering them an established network and not taking advantage of independent artists like most online labels tend to do.
