Interview: Headliner the Orb drops by to chat about Global Gathering

Global Gathering will be one of the biggest dance music events ever to hit Australia. Headliner The Orb took time out this week to discuss their past, present and future and all things Global Gathering. Check it out!



The Orb has been on and defining the dance music seen for 20 years. A phenomenal achievement. How has your music and that of the wider Ambient House genre evolved over those years?

It is some times to hard to try so many different ideas on one album, thats why I did an album in Berlin with Thomas and released it on Kompakt Records, as it has a European sound. We wanted to be part of a new generation of chill out heads. Then there's the British collection, humour and great vocal lines, pop meets the weasel. A return to the future no less. The Dream.



What are you currently working on? and where do you see your music heading?

HFB a new project , a film score for a japanese director & just done adverts for amnesty. Plus a film called " plastic planet ", which a new orb will be released next year of music from this film. Also a 18 minute piece of music called " cognition factor ", both of these you can google and find out more!



The Orb has reached #1 album on the UK charts. What does one do to celebrate reaching #1 and did this in any way change the destiny of The Orb?

Get smashed, get the biggest bottle of champagne & get wasted. Go down the pub & paint a picture of a story that you can, one day tell your angel.



Our website has a large community of young up and coming DJs looking to make their mark on the dance music industry. As a long time success in the industry, what would your advice to them be?

Be lucky, ride the dream & set up a big network of contacts, as it's more about who you know, not what you know ... both helps .... if you're a con, the world will hear!



Has The Orb toured Australia before, I have been unable to find previous Australian gigs. If you have, how did you find the crowd compared to other crowds? If you haven't, what are you looking forward to the most in Australia?

Yes, Earthcore in 2002, nutty friendly crowd, until they find out you're from the uk, then it's piss off pommie, and toilet humour, early mornings and fun nights . love it!!



Can we sneak any hints out of you as to what we may expect from your Global Gathering Australian sets?

Surprise is always the best cure. May we present, KEITH YORK on drums, THE CORPORAL on vocals & AUTO FIL on one. Plus GARY OH NO on visuals, my madness ..... new songs with new mixes .... old songs with new mixes too.



The Global Gathering Australian tour is going to be absolutely massive, probably the biggest dance music event ever to hit our country. What do you have to say to Australians, who have never witnessed an event of such magnitude before?
