We get an extra long weekend this year. all the heads guys from each country are meeting in sydney and they are shutting down the whole city on the second friday of september!! i recon we will be bombed or something!!!

The NSW Government has announced details of a public holiday to coincide with the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) Summit to be held in Sydney in September 2007.

The public holiday on the 7 September 2007 has been declared for the Sydney metropolitan area only, including Penrith, Camden and Campbelltown. (see full LCA list below).

New legislation has been introduced to ensure the workplace entitlements for Sydney workers. Where NSW State awards and agreements provide for public holiday entitlements, these have now been extended to cover the APEC holiday. The introduction of the legislation was necessary as not all State awards recognise regional holidays.

These arrangements provide clear guidelines to all employers who are subject to State awards that the APEC public holiday is to be treated like any other public holiday. This means that workers can have the day off and be paid or if they work they should receive the appropriate penalty rates.

The Minister for Industrial Relations, the Hon John Della Bosca, has written to the federal Minister for Workplace Relations, Mr Joe Hockey, requesting that similar amendments be made if necessary to federal legislation, in order to ensure that workers under federal awards and agreements enjoy similar protections to those achieved for workers under NSW industrial instruments.

These arrangements will cover people who would normally work in the Sydney metropolitan area who have been asked to keep away to assist with the smooth operation of the APEC event.

The APEC Summit will be the most significant gathering of international leaders ever hosted in Australia and the public holiday has been declared to minimise disruption to the general public and follows extensive consultation with employer groups and unions.

The legislation will also allow the NSW Government to close general shops in the affected local council areas, if security concerns arise. At the present time, it is anticipated that shops in the city will be able to trade as normal but the Government will be able to use these powers to ensure the adequate protection and safety of visitors and residents.

The public holiday will apply to the following Local Council Areas:

apparently they are already setting up basses and sattelite dishes on the top of different hotels where the big wigs are staying! im not going near the city. i might get blown up. then whats the point?!

I would have traditionally... but someone thinks that protesting is useless

So maybe I wont be allowed (which means most certainly)
But APEC is a bit spread out as far as focus goes

My Dad was helping build the APEC meeting room, every morning they would go thru his tools and serach everything!!

If i were you i wouldnt even bother, you would turn up protest for 5 mins if you lucky before police blast you with there water cannon and your put in handcuffs. They dont care what we think..

It's protest about ecenomic choices & the morality thereof.... but like I said- I think APEC protest is TOO UN-FOCUSED!!!
