Thumbs up The NEW Playstation 3 to be smaller, use less power and cheaper.

The article on itnews.com.au where this information is sourced from is quite technical, so i will translate for everyone.

  • Basically the smaller fabrication of the graphics and core processor will equate to using less power. It may also mean faster processors in the near future (Not that it needs it).
  • The cost cutting and reduction in parts will equate to a cheaper console
  • The reduction of parts required will also equate to a smaller console.

Gaming gargatuan, Sony has confirmed that the next batch of its Darth Vader's toaster for joypad jigglers will be slimmed down in a number of ways.
A recent corporate strategy meeting saw Sony Entertainment President Kaz Hirai confirm that Sony's fabs had, for a number of months now, been churning out Cell processors for the next generation console using 65nm tecnology as opposed to the older, and much less efficient and more expensive 90nm silicon used in the past.

He also said that the company had been reducing costs by reducing the number of components used.

Hirai also confirmed that plans were afoot to switch the manufacture of the RSX 'Reality Synthesiser' graphics processor, developed by Nvidia, from 90nm to 65nm fabrication by this autumn.

So you'll soon be able to have a PS3 in your living room without feeling like you are living on a sub-tropical heli-pad.

Smaller, quieter, cooler PS3 coming this autumn - Hardware - iTnews Australia

I would get the current one. The discussions are very early days. It wouldn't surprise me if their was a big price drop on the current model around Christmas time.

there was an article in this month's issue of official playstation magazine, saying the possibility of the mini PS3

they brought up some interesting points about sony's gaming products

and that is, that with every sony gaming product, they have brought out a Mini version of it later down the track of releasing it

and this rumour must have started somewhere, meaning that these rumours could be reliable

even so, i'm gonna get the current model asap, along with MGS4 without a doubt
